Wind Chill Information

Often in Western Pennsylvania the windchill can be low.  Using the windchill chart issued by the National Weather Service,  we determine whether to delay or cancel.  You can view the windchill chart by clicking this link: Wind Chill Chart

We understand that some of our students may be waiting at the bus stop for 5-10 minutes or more if they have to walk a considerable distance.  With that in mind along with the windchill chart, you can see that a temperature of 0 degrees combined with a wind speed of 10 mph gives you a -16 wind chill. School districts typically begin to consider delay due to wind chill between -10 to -15 degrees, temperatures at which frostbite cannot occur but are approaching a concerning level.

When it comes to assessing road conditions, the district collaborates closely with Scottdale Borough and East Huntingdon Township to monitor safety. The Superintendent and Transportation Director also personally evaluate areas that are known to be particularly challenging during inclement weather. This ensures the safety of our students riding district buses, as well as our high school student drivers.

We ask for your understanding during these weather events. With a district spanning approximately 51 square miles, road conditions can vary significantly. While your street may appear clear and safe, other areas might still pose risks for travel. Your patience and support help us prioritize the safety of all our students and staff.
